Stockport’s nightlife has just hit a whole new level, and this time, it’s permanent.
Fast becoming a powerhouse in its own right, with a town centre that’s been transformed by exciting independent shops and cutting-edge developments, Stockport is fast becoming a contender for one of the most exciting places to live in Greater Manchester.
For years, SK1 has thrived on its underground energy, with pop-up parties, legendary car park raves, and the unforgettable buzz of Foodie Friday.
But this summer, something permanent is taking root.
Opening soon, Underbank: a daring, all-hours destination bringing Stockport’s very first Beer Hall, a margarita bar with serious swagger, and a custom-built sound system that guarantees nights you won’t forget.
Underbank – Stockport
The family-run venture, from local husband and wife duo Des and Nina O’Malley, the team behind Nook in Heaton Moor, opens its doors for a friends-and-family soft launch on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th May, with 50% off your bill before 8pm if you follow @theunderbank on Instagram.

The grand opening weekend follows hot on its heels on Friday the 30th and Saturday the 31st of May, promising a serious party to set the tone.
“It’s the new Berlin”

That’s what everyone (well at least one well-known person – Luke Una) has been saying about Stockport.
But while the rave-in-a-car-park energy and epic street parties have created hype, they’ve all been fleeting. Underbank is the first to channel that spirit into bricks and mortar, creating a space for music lovers, foodies, and locals to come together every week, Thursday to Sunday, from midday to 1 am.
“It’s been a long time coming,” says Nina. “Stockport is changing – the food and drink scene is getting better and better, and we want to be a real part of that.”
Set across multiple levels in a striking former Cheshire bank and furniture store, Underbank lives up to its name. Thanks to Stockport’s unique geography, perched on a red sandstone cliff, the venue offers entrances from both ‘Over’ and ‘Under’ bank.
On one side, a roof terrace leads directly into the bustling old town market plaza. On the other hand, the ground floor opens into the heart of The Underbank – now home to beloved independents like Stanley, Bruk, Cantaloupe and Yellow Hammer.
Beer, Margaritas, and Serious Sound
The heart of Underbank is its Beer Hall, serving a rotating menu of local craft brews, from Runaway to Pomona, plus a “proper pint of Guinness.” Summer drinkers can also look forward to frozen margaritas (think mango, coconut and beyond) and watermelon tequila hot shots, best enjoyed on the sun-drenched front terrace.
And it’s not just about what’s in your glass.
A major pull for Underbank is its dedicated sound system, designed by global audio experts Hollowsphere, who’ve provided setups for festivals across the world.
It’s the first time the premium Void sound system has landed in Stockport – and the launch lineup isn’t messing around.
Expect DJ sets from Rich Reason, James Holroyd, Mix-Stress, and Sticky Heat across the opening weekend.
Kitchens, Kebabs & What’s Next
Food-wise, Underbank plans to keep things fresh, hosting seasonal guest kitchens throughout the year. First up is VASO Kitchens by Steve Patel, serving up Indian small plates, pachos, and kebabs.
And that’s just phase one.
Des hints at bigger plans already underway. “We’re opening in stages. Right now it’s the ground floor, but we’ve got a basement recording studio and events space coming, and if things go to plan, Stockport’s first roof terrace next year.”
So whether you’re after an ice-cold margarita in the sun, a Guinness-fuelled night with friends, or a thumping DJ set that doesn’t end at 10pm – Underbank looks set to be a game-changer for SK1.
The Underbank updates
It looks set to be a great addition to the regeneration happening in thriving Stockport and will be open Thursdays to Sundays every week from midday to 1am.
Follow @theunderbank for updates, and if you’re quick, grab a half-price meal during the soft launch weekend. After that, it’s full steam ahead for what might just be the new social heart of Stockport.
